We have learned a lot about teaching vocabulary to our students over the past twenty years, most notably from the National Reading Panel's report and from the work of Isabel Beck and her colleagues. From these two sources, we learned the importance of the vocabulary component in overall reading skills as well as how to identify which words to teach and how to teach them effectively. In this webinar, we move beyond this information to focus on making vocabulary connections. By making these connections between and among words, students learn how to form "big pictures" of families of words. These strategies and techniques are important for all students, but they are especially meaningful for our dyslexic students.

This webinar is over an hour in length and will provide you with a wealth of information. Lynn Givens will discuss the following:

  • how to organize words so that these connections can be made
  • how to select related words to teach, making it easier for students to learn and master vocabulary through a series of associations
  • an introduction to morphology through vocabulary instruction
  • how to use morphology to help students connect groups of words
  • how to incorporate an understanding of grammar to foster additional connections
  • how to use word walls and other classroom visuals to encourage continued vocabulary learning
  • how to use a variety of other strategies and techniques so that vocabulary learning is engaging and ongoing, helping students to become word-curious and word-conscious
